THE FIGURES OF THE FRENCH TROUT INDUSTRY

A mainly French market

Some figures: trout is the 6th fresh fish consumed by households (source: "Panel SECODIP Consoscan 2004" – a French panel study conducted in 2004). 80% of the trout is sold in supermarkets and superstores. 36, 000 T were produced in France in 2005, of which 6, 500 T in Brittany, which is the second largest producing area in France, after Aquitaine which produces 10, 500 T.

Despite a drop in French production of 15, 000 T over 10 years, it is a dynamic industry which is seeking to develop new produce which will be even more adapted to consumers' needs. Brittany is therefore the only area to offer sea matured trout, and some fish farms have recently started to market their first organically-farmed produce.

Fish cultures are becoming specialised so that their know-how will be appreciated and acknowledged (restocking 6%, leisure fishing 13%, consumption 81%).

The different players in the Trout industry: fish farmers, fish feed producers, carriers, oxygen suppliers, processing plants, equipment manufacturers (in co-operation with the Authorities and help from third-party certification bodies) increase their efforts every day, to guarantee the quality and conformity of all the produce which we offer consumers.
